Beautiful Silence

If you have ever walked down
Empty streets
In the still of night,
Awoken to the silent
Starry skies
In the lull of dawn,
Observed how quietly
A tree stands
Through spring and fall,
Wondered at the
Distant existence
Of a vaccumed space
That doesn’t complain
Of being left unoccupied;
If you have ever seen
Pain in the eyes
Of a wise man who chooses
Not to respond to impudence;
You should know
That you don’t always need
Words to make your presence felt,
A voice to make yourself heard,
Persuasiveness to leave a mark,
Oratory to take a stand.
Sometimes the humble act of
Keeping quiet
Is better than a thousand words.

Allah سبحانه و تعالى Commands us in the Noble Qur’an:

“O you who have believed, fear Allah and speak words of appropriate justice. He will [then] amend for you your deeds and forgive you your sins. And whoever obeys Allah and His Messenger has certainly attained a great attainment.”
[Surah Al-Ahzab 70 – 71]

“No good is there in much of their private conversation, except for those who enjoin charity or that which is right or conciliation between people. And whoever does that seeking means to the approval of Allah – then We are going to give him a great reward.”
[Surah An-Nisa 114]

Once, Mu’adh bin Jabal رضي الله عنه asked the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم to inform him of some good work that would admit him into Paradise and distance him from the Hellfire. The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم mentioned to him the virtues of many good deeds, then said:

“Shall I inform you of the foundation of all of that?”

Mu’adh رضي الله عنه said: “Certainly.”

The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم took hold of his tongue and said:

“Restrain yourself from this.”

Mu’adh then asked: “O Prophet of Allah! Are we held to task for the things that we say?”

“May your mother be bereaved of you*, O Mu’adh! Does anything topple people headlong into the Hellfire save the harvests of their tongues?”
[ Grade: Hasan (Darussalam)
Reference : Sunan Ibn Majah 3973]

We seek refuge in Allah from the evil in our souls and from our sinful deeds. May Allah سبحانه و تعالى protect us from the Fire of Hell. Ameen.

Also in another hadith reported by Abu Hurairah

The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said,

He who believes in Allah and the Last Day must either speak good or remain silent.”

[Muslim reference : Book 18, Hadith 1]

*the phrase, “May your mother be bereaved of you” is commonly used among Arabs as an expression of surprise or used for emphasis,  and not meant literally. Just so you know 🙂

  1. True and beautifully said. There is written by the grave of Imaam Abu Hanifa r. a the saying of his : Jirmuhu sagheer wa jurmuhu kabeer. ( It’s size is small but it’s crime is big ) referring to the tongue.

  2. That was beautiful mashallah 🙂
Did you know that the wise men of the past used to record on paper whatever they spoke that day? This was because they were afraid of accounting for everything they said so they wanted to make sure they talked as less as possible. Then, there was a women who was so careful about her speech she would only quote something from the Quran whenever she was asked something! She must have had some knowledge they way she could do that, but the point is, they were so careful when it came to talking. And we talk all day as if there’s nothing to worry about there!
