Pop, rock and all that jazz
You listen to it all day long
Soothing, melodious, it’s hypnotic
Puts you in a trance, it’s chaotic
Sometimes the words don’t even make sense
Yet you listen to them rhyme
Close your eyes, make yourself cozy
Hum the tune, sing along.
You know it’s just so wrong
But you still listen to it as it plays
It’s prohibited you read it somewhere
But you act as if you’re not aware
Revolutionary, romantic, obscure lyrics
Create all types of emotions in you
Make you believe that the make-believe
Life is the one to live by, the one you must seek.
It doesn’t strengthen you, just makes you weak
You don’t realize
That it’s Satan’s voice
That’s got you hypnotized
The singers you idolize
Music artists, boy bands
When you should be reading the Qur’an
And following the Prophet’s command.
No particular reason for posting this, not planned either. Wrote this poem a few days back just randomly and like the “Calendar” widget on the right-hand side of my blog says “Seize the Day”, I believe it’s high time I put it into practice. Insha’Allah. May Allah give us all the strength and the ability to do good deeds solely for His Pleasure. Ameen.
Alhumdulillah Ramadan’s round the corner and wow am I so excited for it! So I’ve finally decided to publish all of the poems/posts sitting in my drafts for ages Insha’Allah. So I’m warning you it can get a little random. Read at your own risk. I’m kidding. It will surely be of some benefit Bi ithniLlah.
So, getting down to business, I know some of you reading this would be thinking that I’m flogging a dead horse (I’ve always found this phrase extremely bizarre, don’t know why I’m still using it though) by writing on the prohibition of music. Because there are many Muslims out there who listen to it anyway. Knowing how some of you absolutely love listening to it I’m sorry to break this to you, but music is haraam. Here’s the proof:
From the Qur’an:
“And befool [them gradually] those whom you can among them with your voice (i.e. songs, music, and any other call for Allah’s disobedience),…” (Surah Al-Israa 17:64)
Allah Ta’aala addresses Satan in this verse. Scholars interpreted Satan’s fooling mankind with his voice to mean through the use of music, song and amusement. This was the view of Mujahid.
There are a couple other verses too.
From the Hadiths:
Narrated Abu ‘Amir or Abu Malik Al-Ash’ari: that he heard the Prophet (ﷺ) saying, “From among my followers there will be some people who will consider illegal sexual intercourse, the wearing of silk, the drinking of alcoholic drinks and the use of musical instruments, as lawful…” (Sahih Al Bukhari Vol. 7, Book 69, Hadith 494)
Ibn ‘Abbas reported from the Prophet: “…Allah has forbidden me wine, game of chance and kubah(drums). He said: Every intoxicant is unlawful. Sufyan said: I asked ‘Ali b. Badhimah about kubah. He replied: Drum.” (Sunan Abi Dawud Book 26, Hadith 3687)
And Allah knows best.
Might write a detailed post on this topic some other time insha’Allah. If you’ve got any questions, just ask. 🙂
Any good in this post is from Allah and the mistakes are from myself. May Allah forgive me. Ameen.
Remember me in your dua’as! Wassalamu’alaikum.
